UNDERWATER MALAYSIA PHOTO/VIDEO COMPETITION

Don't miss the opportunity of a lifetime to take part in the world's most exciting photo/video competition. The event will begin in Kota Kinabalu, from which point participants will venture out to various islands to match their skills against other participants from around the world.  With the option to choose your destination, resort and photo or video activity, the Underwater Malaysia Photo/Video Competition will be like no other.

The competition is open to all amateur photographers and videographers, and all participants will have the opportunity to attend morning seminars hosted by underwater photography instructors over a 3 day period.  Prizes will be awarded for both photo and video categories, including all-inclusive dive vacations, camera and video equipment and scuba gear.  Don't miss your chance to learn from the best while experiencing world-class diving at some of the Pacific's most spectacular resorts.

September 7, 1999 Depart to resort of choice for Orientation-Dives. Stay through Sept. 11, 1999.

September 13, 1999 Final judging and Presentation of Awards.

Bruce Elliott Rasner

BRUCE ELLIOTT RASNER

BRUCE ELLIOTT RASNER is based in Costa Mesa, California and has studied underwater photography for over a decade. He has traveled to all corners of the globe. Bruce has won many photographic competitions and has taught underwater photography at local colleges.

He has been published as a photojournalist in all U.S. diving-related magazines along with several foreign publications. Through his stock, he has been regularly published in books, calendars and CD rom.

For the last eight years, his emphasis has been on presenting his work as fine art. Bruce exhibits in several fine art festivals and galleries in California. His museum quality/mounted prints have been acquired by individuals and businesses across the country.

Doug Perrine

DOUG PERRINE

Doug Perrine, owner of Innerspace Visions, a stock photography library in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, has had a varied career as a scuba diving instructor, an English teacher, a marine biologist, and a photojournalist. Currently, he is a self-employed writer and photographer specializing in maring life.

His photographs have been published in hundreds of books and magazines, including National Geographic, Audubon, Smithsonian, Elle, Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report, Omni, Time and Ocean Realm to mention a few.

Perrine is a contributing editor of Scuba Times Magazine, and the author of Sharks (Voyageur Press, 1995) and Mysteries of the Sea (Publications International, 1997), has also served as a consultant on filming projects for the National Geographic Society, the Discovery Channel and other companies.

Tom Campbell

TOM CAMPBELL

Recognized as one of the world's leading natural history photographers, Tom Campbell's 'Tack-Sharp' images depict the reality of his subjects.  Nothing is ever manipulated.  Specializing in marine mammals and sharks, his assignments have ranged from filming Orcas in the frigid waters of Norway to photographing dolphins in the Bahamas and Great White Sharks in Australia.  Campbell's photographs have appeared in hundreds of popular publications worldwide.  He has also written dozens of articles and won several national and international photographic competitions.

Tom has designed several photographic items now considered standard equipment for professionals.  He is a consultant to Nikon and other leading manufacturing companies in the world.

As a cinematographer, Campbell's work has been featured in numerous projects for the Discovery Channel and various television productions.  Most recently he completed a segment for Peter Benchley's UPN 'Creature'.  Campbell prides himself in sharing his expertise with other aspiring photographers and cinematographers in the seminars he teaches.

Chris Newbert

Birgitte Wilms

CHRIS NEWBERT & BIRGITTE WILMS

Presently, Chris and his wife Birgitte conduct  international dive tours for Rainbowed Sea Tours, Inc., a company they founded. They live in Colorado where they manage their stock marine life photography business from their home.

Both have won  international underwater photographic competitions, and their work has appeared in books and magazines worldwide. In 1985 Chris published his first underwater photographic book, Within a Rainbowed Sea. Now in its 10th printing, this classic volume continues to gather critical acclaim as one of the most beautiful photographic books of all time.

In late 1994, the sequel In a Sea of Dreams was released. It features the photography of both Chris and his wife. In its first few months of release, In a Sea of Dreams won the World Grand Prize for Best Book of Underwater Photography, awarded in Antibes, France.

FRED D. GARTH

FRED D. GARTH

Fred D. Garth began in the diving business in 1986 when he took the position as editor of Scuba Times magazine. In 1987, Garth formed GBPublishing, which purchased the magazine later that year.  He spearheaded the creation of Scuba Times Online in 1995, which has now grown into the world's largest diving website.

A 1979 journalism graduate of Southern Oregon State College, Garth worked as a sports columnist in the early 1980s for The Times Daily, a New York Times-owned newspaper. He began taking underwater photos in 1986 and has had his images published worldwide.

Through his position at GBP, Garth judges the publishable quality of thousands of photographs each year. Some of the world's top photographers who have had their images published in Scuba Times include, Chris Newbert, Doug Perrine, David Doubilet, Flip Nicklin, Marty Snyderman, Howard Hall, Norbert Wu, James Watt and Bob Talbot.
